2nd January 2010

A large gathering of 1,500 Cormorants were to the east of the island first thing this morning, possibly in reaction to the unexpectedly strong and cold westerly wind. The Turnstones and Purple sandpipers like wise chose the east side to roost and settled on Lion rock in Niffy bay (left).

The sea was fairly quiet with just 1 Red-throated Diver, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, 4 Common Scoter and 6 Great Crested Grebes.
Another wintering Song Thrush was ringed and a Blackbird from the October influx was retrapped (right).
